Hello again Paul - I can't believe I've left it nearly 18 months before replying! Well, not only did I do (and enjoy) the London to Brighton in 2007, I did it again this year with my daughter accompanying me. I'm pleased to say she made it, including riding all the way up Ditchling Beacon. There's a picture here: http://www.flickr.com/photos/8934724@N04/2599909617/
A few weeks back I did an offroad London to Brighton - it was possibly the hardest days cycling I've ever done! It was about 75 miles and took me about seven hours.
I'm planning a tour of (part of) East Anglia with some old friends next year. I also plan to ride a day with another friend when he does his end-to-end in May.
Are you still going to do it the easy way?
Bob.

Hello 2008 tripper, yes it was just right, maybe a bit warm at times but equally cold and wet in Scotland too, I would do it again at the same time. Best of luck, if you need any planning help just say
Jun 9 2007 09:44 am
Bob great to hear from you! I too find I am reliving various stages and aspects of the ride and for sure hope to do it again, perhaps the right way round! Hopefully within the next 2-3 years.
I had an interesting experience last month I was in Fort William for a walking holiday, we droive up teh A 82 from Glasgow, exactly th eroad I cycled down! Incredible, I could recall exactly what I did in each lay by and even what I was thinking about!
Good luck for the L to B, strangely I haven't been on the bike much just starting again with some weekend rides. One ride i rather fancy is taking the ferry Portsmouth to Santander and riding back-10 day sapparently! You got any plans?
Jun 9 2007 12:53 am
Hi paul hope to do a simalar trip to yours in 2008 did you think that may was the best time to do the ride many thanks and well done.
May 21 2007 04:44 pm
Hi Paul, Bob here.
Well, it was just about a year ago that we were both setting off to do our big event. I've thought about it pretty much every day since - in fact most of the time I wish I was still out there riding it! Got any more big rides planned? I've not sorted any out yet though I'm doing the London to Brighton ride for the BHF as usual (June 17th) - only 54 miles :)
My web pages are about to disappear (my mate needs the space for something else) but I'm hoping to resurrect them somewhere else soon - there'll be a link to your pages in there.
Cheers mate, Bob.

Hi Paul,
My name is Dale Collins from Doncaster. I completed the ride on June 9th after 9 days in the saddle (Ultimate Links 205) and since finishing the ride I relive the experience everyday. I like yourself shed a few tears on completion. Im planning on doing it again next year but over a longer period. Well done mate. May the experience stay with you forever.
Yours
Dale Collins

Nearly there mate, keep going and very well done. Contrary to earlier reports, we on sunny South Island, have not drifted off the map and we have not been annexed to France. We may have cut the mooring ropes to give ourselves at little more breathing space from that savage heathen wilderness north of the Solent but we are still here. Speak to you soon.
Best Regards from us ?foreigners? at Albany House

What a pity we did not feel fit and able enough to trail you with the baggage and toolkit, and nobody to wave the chequered flag as you whizz past (or up to) the finishing post! However, somebody is watching over you to get you to the church on time! - Dad

Nice Pictures looks like the razor has broken.
Keep on pushing to the end now. It looks as if the weather will be be kind to you so enjoy it if you can and make sure the brakes are working when you get to Lands End.
See you soon the Tannery Crew

Getting down the west country now. Beware the cider farms. They drag you in kicking and screaming and make you drink their wares. You need to be able to cycle straight, and your bottom probably can't take much more punishment anyway.
Almost there, Matey! Keep smiling. Wind in your hair.....flies in your teeth.....

I am knackered after having played three rounds of golf over the last 3 days - (looking forward to going back to work for a rest) so can't really contemplate the thought of treading it from one end of the country to another.
No doubt you will come back to work looking a bit like John Wayne all bow legged and saddle sore.
What really worries me is what you are going to do after you have finished this marathon!!!
Keep on pushing...

Alright Paul,
On a bike from one end of the country to the other in 15days!!
WOW...
You obviously must be taking your time (i did it last summer in 11 days)
Ok obviously thats not entirely true, but you dont expect Dr Wes to publicly congratulate you and make your head as big as mine :)
On a serious note, you'll be delighted to know that even I'm impressed with what you're doing and must admit that...(Wait for it)... I couldnt manage that myself. I hope you raise lots of money for Atrial Fibrillation, and if your route takes you past Cambridge be sure to pop into the hospital where I'll give you a free check up.
Good luck with the rest of the journey,
Dr Wes :D

Clem, you are now moving into bandit country. Do not stop at any traffic lights; give way signs, pubs etc as you will find some wide boy nicking your rims!!
Glad to read that you are still going strong.
Rob, Jo and Ben.

Clemo,
I have been keeping up to date with your progress and you are doing well for a not so young person.Looks like you've met some interestiiinnng people on route and now youre south of the border there will be less of a language barrier.I think you will be riding into more sunshine as you head south this weekend. Hope you and the bike keep going, Sue says "hope you havent got a sore bum"

Today is The Gloriest First of June - named after a famous naval battle in 1794, part of the french revolutionary wars, won by the Brits led by Admiral L<ord Howe- and so it turns out to be! Soon you'll be complaining of the heat - Dad

Keep smiling Matey. It's all downhill to Cornwall from there. At least, that what it looks like on the map. We're very proud of you (in a manly, beer drinking, rugby playing, rufty-tufty kind of way). Can I meet you somewhere - I need you to sign my mileage expenses. Simon Wright

WE have put a rubber ring on your seat so that you can rest your p*le* when you come back.
You have loads of paperwork to do and all staff have resigned !!!
The IOW has sunk beyond trace and is joining up with France.
Apart from that alls well.
Keep applying the cream and best of luck from all at Tannery
May 31 2006 03:00 am
How does the clock work in this guest book? I certainly did not leave a message at 3.56am on 30th!! Enjoy the sun while it lasts! - Dad
May 30 2006 09:57 am
Sounds like you need a 'rest day' - have you got the golf clubs with you? Championship course at Troon can't be that far off your route, although the Club Secretary may have a thing or two to say about a one-piece lycra cycling outfit not meeting the 'expected standard of dress code for the course'! Keep up the good work, Lake District hills to look foward to soon. John.
May 30 2006 06:07 am
Hi Paul, love the photo!!! Hope your bum is not too sore yet!! Looks like you'll be back in time for the world cup!!
Keep going!
Love
Bernie.

I notice your plan to go through Culcheth in a day or two. I have not heard that name since 1947 when I was there for about 6 months of part III training at what was then HMS Ariel and formerly a camp for displaced persons! Later on you are staying at Chester YHA. I doubt if you'll remember when we stayed there many years ago self-catering. I hope it has been smartened up since then. There seems to have been quite a lot of Scotland which can be quite a nice holiday option avoiding all the Gatwick hassle! Mum and I strolled through Glen Coe some years back in the '80's, when staying near Oban. Good luck navigating the lanes south of Carlisle - how did that route come about I wonder. Presume you have web access at the YHA's or perhaps other B&B's - Free wheel the rest of the way - Dad

What happened to the diary?! Has the wheel fallen off? The weather is supposed to be better tomorrow anyway. Good luck for the rest of the trip - it may be less Monarchs and Glens south of the border.
love from Dad and Mum
