1. North to South, to do or not to do? The wind was a severe problem for the first 3 days, but the whole country had bad weather then. Apart from that to be honest there was only light winds and the direction varied a lot anyway. I would do it again that way.
2. Travel light-if carrying gear take one of each plus spare and wash them each night. Arrange a parcel exchange halfway to make a change. Make sure all clothing is the lightest possible of its kind. You won't need much for evening wear as you will only be shuffling to the pub and back
3. take the time to go to the library and check the route you have chosen against OS maps, I only had time to do half of the country but I suffered for it second half. The CTC YHA route follows hilly roads especially Dartmoor and Welsh borders
4. The A30, A38 and A6 were all fine, don't assume all big name roads will be bad. For the most part there were safe cycling edges to the roads which were fast and well surfaced
5. NCR through Glasgow from Loch Lomond not too bad it follows a canal towpath so no good for road tyres unless touring tyres but after city centre towrds Edinburgh-puncture city! All the local kids smash their booze bottles here!
